Wednesday Vignette: Flower Window

Wednesday Vignette is hosted every week by Anna of Flutter and Hum. This week I was looking at all the activity on the south end of the house. It's become one of the most floriferous areas of the garden for early summer. The ubiquitous Yucca filamentosa works well in this hot, dry bed with its blue-green leaves topped by tall creamy white flowers. I was looking at these flowers when I noticed how the branching inflorescence framed the foliage beyond it.

I don't know about you, but I usually see pictures of branches, foliage, or some man-made structure framing flowers. That's why I thought this scene was so interesting. It's a reversal of the similar kinds of shots I normally see. Here, the flowers support the foliage, instead of the other way around, something I'd like to accomplish throughout the garden. However, I did also like the wider shot that includes the sparks of orange from the Kniphofia and Mimulus cardinalis in the background.

For the curious, the grey foliage belongs to Arctostaphylos silvicola 'Ghostly', the bright yellow variegated foliage is Cistus 'Mickie'.
